A Feline Haven: Inside the World of a Cat Sanctuary
For cat lovers all over the world, there are few things more heartwarming than the sight of a feline finding its forever home. But for cats who have found themselves on the streets or in overcrowded shelters, the path to that happy ending can be a long and difficult one. Enter cat sanctuaries, magical places where cats can live and thrive while waiting for their forever homes.
So, what is a cat sanctuary? At its core, a cat sanctuary is a space where cats can live safely and comfortably until they’re adopted. But a good cat sanctuary does so much more than that. These sanctuaries offer cats medical care, socialization, and plenty of love and attention from dedicated volunteers.
One such sanctuary is Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. This non-profit organization is dedicated to ending the killing of cats and dogs in America’s shelters and has a sanctuary that spans over 3,700 acres. The sanctuary is home to around 1,600 animals, including a large number of cats. The cats live in spacious cabins and are free to roam and play in large enclosed areas.
At the Best Friends sanctuary, cats receive top-notch veterinary care from a team of skilled veterinarians. They are also socialized by volunteers, trained to be more comfortable around humans so they’ll be more likely to find their forever homes. The sanctuary even has a kitten nursery, where orphaned and abandoned kittens can receive round-the-clock care from volunteers.
Cats at Best Friends aren’t just cared for, they’re loved. “We absolutely adore these cats,” says Best Friends volunteer Michele Haldeman. “They are all so unique and special. We want to make sure that they are as comfortable and happy as possible while they’re waiting for their forever homes.”
And while Best Friends is one of the largest and most well-known cat sanctuaries in the world, it’s far from the only one. All over the globe, there are dedicated volunteers working tirelessly to care for cats in need.
For example, TinyKittens, a cat sanctuary in British Columbia, has become famous for their innovative approach to caring for cats. They use technology to keep tabs on the cats, with cameras streaming live footage of the cats’ daily activities on the sanctuary’s website. This way, volunteers and admirers from around the world can keep an eye on the cats and see firsthand how they’re doing.
And while it can be bittersweet to see cats finally get adopted and leave the sanctuary, it’s always the goal. “It’s the best feeling in the world to see a cat find their forever home,” says Michele. “That’s what we’re here for. We’re here to make sure that these cats have a chance to live happy, healthy lives with families who will love them forever.”
If you’re interested in helping cats in need, there are plenty of ways to get involved. Consider donating time or money to a local cat shelter or sanctuary, or even fostering a cat yourself. With the help of dedicated volunteers, cat sanctuaries can continue to provide a safe haven for cats in need, and help them find the forever homes they deserve.
